The American Cities Where You Can Travel Solo Without Bleeding Your Bank Account Dry

Solo travel doesn't have to mean a second mortgage. These ten American cities are quietly making it possible to eat well, sleep well, and actually do things. All without the financial hangover that usually follows a trip abroad.

There's a certain freedom that comes with travelling alone, and an even greater freedom when you're not constantly doing the maths on whether you can afford another night.

Flight data from Kayak has thrown up ten US cities where the combination of cheap airfares and reasonable hotel rates make solo travel genuinely accessible right now, not in a staying-in-a-shoebox kind of way, but in a way that leaves room in the budget for the good stuff.

Atlanta, Georgia

Average round-trip airfare: $248 | Average nightly hotel rate: $183

Atlanta's status as one of America's busiest airport hubs means flights are frequent and competition keeps prices honest.

The city itself rewards slow exploration: the Atlanta BeltLine is a converted rail corridor that threads through neighbourhoods and public art.

Piedmont Park is the kind of green space that makes urban life feel manageable, and the Georgia Aquarium is genuinely one of the best in the country.

For food, skip the tourist traps and head to Ponce City Market or Krog Street Market, both of which pull together a strong lineup of local vendors under one roof. The High Museum of Art and the World of Coca-Cola fill out a solid day of culture if museums are your thing.

Raleigh, North Carolina

Average round-trip airfare: $277 | Average nightly hotel rate: $163

Raleigh tends to fly under the radar, which is exactly what makes it interesting.

The food scene has grown up considerably, with Michelin-recommended barbecue spots like Sam Jones BBQ drawing serious attention, and Morgan Street Food Hall showcasing over twenty local chefs in one compact space.

The downtown is walkable, several of the best museums are free including the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and William B. Umstead State Park sits just outside the city for anyone who needs to clear their head between meals.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Average round-trip airfare: $289 | Average nightly hotel rate: $163

Myrtle Beach has a reputation as a family resort town, which it earned honestly given its 60 miles of coastline and 200-plus sunny days a year.

But solo travellers tend to find more here than expected. Kayaking, surfing, and coastal hiking at Myrtle Beach State Park give the trip some structure, and the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is worth an afternoon.

The boardwalk and Broadway at the Beach deliver the expected touristy fun, but venturing down to quieter Surfside Beach or across to Brookgreen Gardens shows a different side of the area. The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is where locals actually go for an evening out.

Denver, Colorado

Average round-trip airfare: $293 | Average nightly hotel rate: $161

Denver is almost unfairly well set up for solo travel. The mountains are right there, the city is genuinely fun on its own terms, and the social scene is the kind that makes it easy to meet people without trying too hard.

Mount Falcon Park and Chautauqua Park offer solid day hikes without requiring a car and a whole production.

Back in the city, the RiNo neighbourhood is worth exploring for its street art and independent food scene, while Cherry Creek skews upscale if that's more your speed.

A concert at Red Rocks amphitheatre, built into actual rock formations outside the city, is the kind of experience that's hard to replicate anywhere else in the country.

Orlando, Florida

Average round-trip airfare: $288 | Average nightly hotel rate: $170

Yes, Disney and Universal are here, and no, they don't need to dominate the itinerary.

Orlando was recently ranked the number one city in the world for green space, which comes as a surprise to most people who've only ever seen it through the lens of theme parks. Lake Eola Park, Wekiwa Springs State Park, and Harry P. Leu Gardens offer real breathing room.

The dining scene has also developed well beyond the resort corridor. Michelin-recognised spots like Se7en Bites and Swine & Sons deliver the kind of meals worth travelling for, without the prices that usually accompany that level of recognition.

Newark, New Jersey

Average round-trip airfare: $289 | Average nightly hotel rate: $170

Newark gets dismissed more often than it deserves. Sitting ten miles from Manhattan with direct train access into the city, it works well as a more affordable base for anyone whose real target is New York but who'd rather not pay New York hotel prices every night.

That said, Newark has its own reasons to stick around.

Branch Brook Park holds one of the largest cherry blossom collections in the entire country, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center runs a serious programme of concerts and comedy, and the Newark Museum of Art is a proper institution with a planetarium and garden attached.

Portland, Oregon

Average round-trip airfare: $329 | Average nightly hotel rate: $138

Portland's hotel rates are low enough to justify the slightly higher airfare, and the city is the kind of place that rewards walking without a plan.

Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the US, and the Columbia River Gorge is just a short drive out of town for anyone wanting more dramatic scenery.

The Alberta Arts District is a good neighbourhood to base yourself in for galleries and independent shops, and Portland's food cart culture is legitimately something to plan around.

Hawthorne Asylum and Cartopia aren't just convenient eating options. They're part of what makes the city feel like itself. Portland is also consistently ranked among the most bike-friendly cities in the world, which makes getting around both cheap and straightforward.

Jacksonville, Florida

Average round-trip airfare: $337 | Average nightly hotel rate: $132

Jacksonville has the lowest hotel rates on this list, and 22 miles of beaches to offset the slightly higher airfare. Jacksonville Beach specifically has a laid-back, walkable vibe with a pier and a relaxed surf culture that doesn't feel performative.

The city also sits on the largest urban park system in the United States, which creates genuine options for kayaking, cycling, and quiet nature time without leaving the metro area.

The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens sits on the river, MOCA Jacksonville handles contemporary work, and the Riverside Arts Market draws local makers on weekends.

Houston, Texas

Average round-trip airfare: $315 | Average nightly hotel rate: $167

Houston is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, and the food reflects that in ways that are genuinely exciting.

Viet-Cajun crawfish from Crawfish & Noodles is the kind of dish that doesn't exist anywhere else quite like it does here, and the Mexican cooking at Xochi is serious.

Beyond eating, the Museum District anchors a strong cultural offering, Hermann Park is a proper green space, and Buffalo Bayou Park runs along the water with good trails and public art installations.

The neighbourhoods shift dramatically as you move across the city, from the gallery-heavy Montrose to the busier energy of Midtown.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Average round-trip airfare: $262 | Average nightly hotel rate: $224

Fort Lauderdale costs more to sleep in than most cities on this list, but the cheap flights and the overall package make it work. The city has been steadily leaving its spring break image behind and is now a genuinely pleasant place to spend a few days alone.

Las Olas Boulevard handles the shopping and restaurant side of things well, the beaches are excellent, and the canal network that earned it the nickname the Venice of America gives it a different kind of charm to most Florida coastal cities.

For something more adventurous, airboat tours through the nearby Everglades are easy to organise and worth the half day they take.
