The American City Everyone Thinks Is Chaotic Just Ranked as the Most Relaxing in the Country

Scientists and researchers just handed America’s most notorious party city a title that almost nobody saw coming. The results are in, and they’re going to make a lot of travelers completely rethink their next trip.

Miami has a reputation that precedes it everywhere. Neon lights, late nights, packed clubs, and an energy that never quite seems to wind down.

So when a new study named it the most relaxing city in the United States, the reaction from most people was probably some version of disbelief.

But the data backs it up.

The Study Behind the Rankings

In August 2026, eSIM provider Holafly set out to find the world’s most relaxing urban destinations, evaluating 50 cities included in the 2026 World’s Best Cities ranking.

The research team looked at a wide range of factors tied to physical and emotional well-being: access to green spaces and wellness centers, air quality, annual sunshine hours, traffic levels, and overall happiness scores.

Data was pulled from TripAdvisor, Numbeo, Wikipedia, World Weather & Climate, and the 2026 Happy City Index. Each metric was converted to a score out of 100, then averaged into a final relaxation score.

Miami landed at sixth place globally with a score of 63.3 out of 100, making it the only American city in the top ten. The drivers behind that score were its sunshine levels, green space, and a hotel spa scene that’s genuinely hard to beat.

Why Miami Makes More Sense Than It Sounds

The party reputation is real, but it only tells part of the story.

Miami has more than 1,000 acres of urban parkland, a coastline that stretches for miles, and a wellness industry that has grown quietly alongside its nightlife. For travelers who know where to look, the city offers something that’s easy to miss on a surface-level visit.

For spa seekers, the Tierra Santa Healing House at Faena Hotel Miami Beach is a strong starting point. It houses one of the largest hammams on the East Coast across 22,000 square feet, and it works equally well as a recovery stop after a long-haul flight or a late night out.

Just north of Miami Beach, the Bal Harbour neighborhood operates at a noticeably slower pace. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort sits right on the beach, and its setup is one that genuinely encourages guests to put the phone down and stay put for a few hours.

Getting Outside the City Noise

For travelers who decompress best when they’re moving, Miami delivers on that front too.

Oleta River State Park is Florida’s largest urban park, and kayaking through its waterways often means sharing the space with manatees. It’s the kind of encounter that has a way of slowing everything down.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden is worth an unhurried afternoon. The gardens are free to enter and tend to draw a quieter crowd than the beachfront further south.

Key Biscayne sits just across the Rickenbacker Causeway and feels like a different city entirely. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Crandon Park both offer walking trails, beaches, mangrove forests, and water sports, with enough space that it rarely feels crowded.

How the Rest of the World Ranked

Miami was the lone American entry in the global top ten. Europe took the top spots, with Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Vienna rounding out the first three places.

The full top ten:

  1. Copenhagen, Denmark
  2. Barcelona, Spain
  3. Vienna, Austria
  4. Vancouver, Canada
  5. Oslo, Norway
  6. Miami, U.S.
  7. Munich, Germany
  8. Singapore
  9. Rome, Italy
  10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

The presence of Miami in that company is the kind of result that rewards a second look. It’s not a city that hands relaxation to visitors automatically, but it’s one where the ingredients are genuinely there for anyone willing to seek them out.
