Where to stay in Cancun
When planning your Cancun getaway, choosing the right accommodation can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking for beachfront luxury in the Hotel Zone or a more authentic local experience in Centro, Cancun has a wide range of options to suit your preferences.
Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone is Cancun’s premier location for tourists seeking a beachside stay with easy access to white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.

The northern part of the Hotel Zone offers calm waters perfect for swimming, while the middle is lined with numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The southern area, quieter and more secluded, is ideal for those looking to relax away from the bustle.
As this is where you find the top beachfront locations, the Hotel Zone is the most touristy and popular area in the city, and it’s also the best place to find accommodation.

I stayed at the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun, a stunning all-inclusive resort located in the northern bay of the Hotel Zone.

Now, I’m not normally a fan of an all-inclusive hotel, but this particular resort was the perfect place to stay to get away from the world.
It has direct access to one of the most beautiful and serene stretches of powdery white sand beaches in Cancun. With Isla Mujeres in the distance blocking the waves offshore, this is a great place for swimming.
There’s also an outdoor lagoon-like pool with cascading waterfalls, so you have two fantastic choices of where to spend your downtime.

All of the rooms have private balconies and incredible views of the ocean and Isla Mujeres in the distance.
I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at all 6 restaurants and cafes – yes, I did try them all!
In addition, the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun is a member of the Green Key initiative, which promotes good environmental practices through programs to reduce consumption of water, electricity, fuel, waste and emissions.

This stunning resort is part of a hand-picked collection by Preferred Hotels. My room had a gorgeous corner balcony with breathtaking ocean and pool views. Worth getting up early to enjoy the sunrise!

Centro (Downtown)
Centro, or downtown Cancun, presents an authentic Mexican vibe, with vibrant local markets, local eateries, and a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the Hotel Zone.

Here, you’ll immerse yourself in local culture and enjoy lower prices.
Staying in Centro offers the chance to wander through colourful streets, sample traditional cuisine and connect with the friendly local community.
It’s an excellent choice for travellers who prioritise cultural experiences and value easy access to both the city’s urban amenities and the natural beauty of nearby beach escapes.

5 DAYS IN CANCUN ITINERARY
Day 1: Relax at the beach
Playa Delfines
Begin your Cancun adventure with a calming day at the shores of Playa Delfines, in the southern area of the Hotel Zone.

This beach is renowned for its expansive stretch of pristine white sand and vibrant turquoise waters.
As you lie back on your sun lounger, be sure to take in the iconic ‘Cancun’ sign, a prime photo opportunity. Indulge in a leisurely swim, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try bodyboarding on the rolling waves.
Playa Tortugas
At the opposite end further north, Playa Tortugas presents a more energetic scene, offering a variety of water sports.

You may hire equipment for jet skiing or parasailing for a thrilling aerial view of Cancun’s coast. Its calm waters are also ideal for a refreshing dip.
This beach is family-friendly, with a pier for ferry rides to Isla Mujeres.
Playa Marlin
For a less crowded experience, Playa Marlin is located in the middle area of the Hotel Zone and it offers a peaceful retreat. It’s a spot where you may stretch out with less interruption and marvel at the uninterrupted sea view.

While bathing in the sun, keep your eyes open for pelicans and other seabirds that regularly visit.
Alternatively, if you are staying at the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun, you can stay and relax at the resort beach or pool. Or you could spend a few hours in their GEM Spa and experience their ten-step hydrotherapy ritual.

Take your first day to unwind, acclimatise to the laid-back beach pace, and savour the beauty of Cancun’s coast.
Day 2: Chichén Itzá and cenote experience
Embark on an immersive journey exploring the ancient ruins of Chichén Itzá, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and of course, one of the best places to visit in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Follow your visit with a refreshing swim in the serene waters of a cenote, and culminate your day savouring traditional Yucatecan cuisine.
Chichén Itzá
The best way to visit Chichén Itzá is by joining a local tour. This way you will be able to gain valuable insights into the fascinating history of Chichén Itzá without the hassle of transportation and scheduling.

A guided tour will also tell you the history and significance of sites such as the iconic El Castillo pyramid, the Temple of the Warriors, and the Great Ball Court.

Your tour guide will elaborate on the site’s importance as a centre of worship and astronomical studies for the Mayan civilisation, detailing the precision of the architecture that aligns with celestial events.

Swimming in a cenote
After visiting Chichén Itzá, it’ll be time for a refreshing dip in a cenote, one of the best things to do in the Yucatan. Here, you can swim in the natural, 40-metre-deep sinkhole enveloped by hanging vines and lush vegetation.

The open sky above and the clear, cool waters below provide a truly unique experience.
Remember to bring your swimsuit, a towel and a waterproof pouch for your phone or a water-resistant camera to capture all those memories.
Sample traditional Yucatecan cuisine
Whether it’s for lunch or to end the day, indulge in the rich flavours of Yucatecan cuisine. Restaurants around Chichén Itzá offer dishes like cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork), one of the most delicious Mexican foods, and sopa de lima (lime soup).

Eating here not only promises a delicious meal but also a continuation of the cultural experience, as you taste recipes passed down through generations.

Day 3: Catamaran to Isla Mujeres
Your third day in Cancun offers an unforgettable escape to Isla Mujeres. You’ll set sail on the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, marvel at marine life while snorkelling, and wander the charming streets of Isla Mujeres town.
Catamaran to Isla Mujeres
Chartering a catamaran offers a luxurious and scenic route to Isla Mujeres, but it doesn’t come cheap. If you can afford it, this is a great way to visit this little Caribbean paradisiac island.

But don’t worry, there is a more affordable way to do it. You can join a group tour that will take you snorkelling (they provide the equipment) on your way to the pristine beaches and town of Isla Mujeres. There is also an open bar and music while you’re on board.

As you glide over the turquoise sea, relish the warm sun and ocean breeze. Upon arrival, you can explore the island at your own leisure.
> Book your private catamaran to Isla Mujeres here
> Book your group tour catamaran to Isla Mujeres here
Ferry to Isla Mujeres
For an even more economical option, take the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.

The journey is swift, typically around 15-20 minutes, and ferries run frequently throughout the day. Round-trip tickets can be purchased at the Ultramar ferry terminal in Cancun.
The ferries are not a comfortable ride, but they are a good budget alternative. Remember to check the schedule beforehand to plan your return trip.
Snorkelling around Isla Mujeres
El Farito Reef, a shallow snorkelling site located 1.5km north of Isla Mujeres, is perfect for all levels of swimmers. Here, you’re likely to spot colourful fish and coral formations.

For an extraordinary experience, snorkel above the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), which features sunken sculptures that act as artificial reefs, supporting a diverse range of aquatic life, including sea turtles.
The MUSA offers a unique snorkelling experience amid submerged sculptures, and the easiest way to access it is by joining a group catamaran tour, which will likely stop here to snorkel.
> Book your group tour catamaran to Isla Mujeres here
Exploring Downtown Isla Mujeres
Stroll through the vibrant streets of Isla Mujeres’ downtown area and visit the local shops for unique handcrafted items.

Cultural sites such as the Iglesia de Concepción Immaculada and the remnants of a Mayan temple at the southern tip of the island offer insight into the area’s rich history.
And of course, treat yourself to some authentic Mexican cuisine at a beachfront restaurant to complete your day.

Rent a golf cart locally and scoot around Isla Mujeres for a novel way of getting around.
Alternatively, if you are exploring with your significant other, you can have a guided tour of the most romantic spots in the island.

Day 4: Jungle adventure day
Embarking on a jungle adventure in Cancun offers an electrifying blend of activities nestled in the heart of lush, tropical landscapes.

Zip-lining is a thrilling way to start your day. Glide above the treetops and experience the forest from a bird’s-eye perspective.
For those seeking a rugged adventure, ATV tours are available. These guided tours take you through muddy paths and natural trails, offering a different vantage point of the jungle.
Remember to book with a reputable local tour company to ensure safety and a quality experience.

Xcaret Park is another unmissable attraction. In this eco-archaeological theme park, you can wander through ancient Mayan ruins, swim in underground rivers, and learn about native wildlife. It’s a fusion of culture, history, and natural beauty.
> Book your Xcaret Park entry ticket incl. night show here
While touring around the jungle, take in the historical significance of the region; many locations are steeped in Mayan history. Marvel at the sight of ancient structures and consider the legacy of the civilizations that once thrived here.

For a refreshing break, take a dip in a cenote, natural sinkholes considered sacred by the Mayans. These serene pools provide a rare opportunity to swim in crystal-clear freshwater amidst the jungle.
Ensure you respect the surroundings and follow all guidelines provided by tour operators to help preserve the beauty and history of these environments for future visitors.
Day 5: Tulum Ruins
Embark on a day trip to the iconic Tulum Ruins, one of the top archaeological sites in the Riviera Maya, where history and stunning sea views blend.

Booking with a local tour company is the most practical choice, ensuring you receive insightful context about the site’s rich past and don’t miss any hidden gems.
To get there you will need to leave Cancun early to maximise your day. Most tours include comfortable return transport from Cancun, so this is the most convenient way of visiting the Tulum Archeological Site.

Tulum was a major trading and religious centre of the Maya, and it is unique for its seaside location, perched above a beach.
Make sure you don’t miss any of these sights:
- El Castillo: The striking clifftop castle offers panoramic views.
- The Temple of the Frescoes: Admire the well-preserved murals depicting Mayan deities and ceremonies.
- The Temple of the Descending God: Look closely to find the figures ingrained in the architecture.

After your tour, relax at the beach below the ruins or visit one of the nearby cenotes for a refreshing swim, particularly the stunning Cenote Dos Ojos.
If you have your own transport and are visiting Tulum Ruins independently, you can stop at Playa del Carmen on your way back for a stroll along Quinta Avenida.

TOP TIPS: It’s a good idea to pack sunscreen and a hat – the sun can be brutal here. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and the midday heat, and wear comfortable shoes to navigate uneven ground.
Also, remember to capture the beauty of this site without encroaching on protected areas, preserving the ruins for future generations. Carry water and stay hydrated throughout your adventure in Tulum Ruins.
If you have more than 5 days in Cancun
If you have more than 5 days in Cancun, there is a lot to discover in the area. If you are in Cancun between May and September, I would consider joining an eco-friendly tour to swim with whale sharks.

FAQs about Cancun
This section addresses some of the common queries you might have when planning your trip to Cancun.

To truly experience the diversity of attractions and activities in Cancun, a stay of at least a week is preferable. However, your trip duration could vary based on your interests, and 5 days in Cancun gives you a good taster for how much there is to do here.
Five days in Cancun allows you to enjoy its beautiful beaches, explore the nightlife, and perhaps visit a couple of nearby attractions. It’s a good amount of time for a brief vacation.

Chichen Itza, a renowned World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is a popular day trip that’s about two hours away. You can also visit the Isla Mujeres or Cozumel for snorkelling and to enjoy the quieter beaches.

The peak season in Cancun is from December to April when the weather is ideal for beach activities and outdoor tours. To avoid crowds, consider visiting between May and November, though be mindful of the rainier season.

Cancun is generally safe for tourists, with a heavy focus on visitor security. As with any travel destination, it’s important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, and to stay informed of local safety guidelines.
My advice from personal experience is to never travel without travel insurance, no matter how safe the destination is. Anything could happen and you want to be prepared. I recommend HeyMondo, which includes Covid-19 coverage.
