These 15 European Countries Are Handing Out Remote Work Visas to Americans Right Now (And Most People Have No Idea)

Europe has been sitting on a secret that could completely transform the way Americans live and work, and the window of opportunity is wide open. If you have a laptop, a Wi-Fi connection, and a job you can do from anywhere, what you are about to read could genuinely change everything.

The number of American digital nomads has more than doubled in just five years, soaring from 7.3 million in 2019 to 18.1 million in 2024. And it makes total sense.

More jobs than ever are remote, the world is more connected than it has ever been, and honestly, the idea of answering emails from a sun-drenched terrace in Lisbon or a cosy apartment in Budapest is a lot more appealing than doing it from your kitchen table in Columbus, Ohio.

The good news? Over a dozen European countries have now rolled out dedicated remote work visa programmes that allow Americans to legally live and work abroad for extended periods. Here is everything you need to know.

A quick note before we dive in: Visa rules and income thresholds change, so always double-check requirements on the official government websites before you start your application. Documents may need notarisation or an apostille, and some offices book up months in advance. Plan ahead, and you will be just fine.

1. Germany

Why you will love it: Incredible cities, world class social programmes, and access to some of Europe’s most spectacular nature.

Application cost: Around $107

Germany might not be the first country that springs to mind when you think of remote work freedom, but hear me out.

If you are a freelancer working in architecture, journalism, the arts, music, or theatre, you may well be eligible for Germany’s residence permit for self-employed workers. There is also a separate route for company founders and sole proprietors.

Fair warning: Germany is famously bureaucratic. Appointments at immigration offices can be booked up months in advance, and you will need a lot of paperwork. Think proof of a real address (an Airbnb will not cut it), health insurance, contracts, and proof of income. But for those who put in the effort, the permit can be renewed indefinitely, and permanent residency is on the table after five years.

2. Portugal

Why you will love it: Glorious food and wine, a warm Atlantic climate, and one of the most vibrant expat communities in Europe.

Application cost: Around $99

Portugal has become something of a mecca for digital nomads, and once you spend five minutes imagining life in Lisbon or Porto, you will completely understand why.

Artists, startup employees, and remote professionals have been flooding in for years, lured by the fantastic arts scenes, the relaxed pace of life, and a community of like-minded people who have already made the leap.

Surfers with remote jobs, meanwhile, head straight to the Algarve, where the coastline is nothing short of spectacular.

There are two visa options here. The Temporary Stay Visa is valid for up to a year and allows multiple entries but cannot be converted into long-term residency. If you want to put down proper roots, the Residency Visa gives you a pathway to a two-year residency permit.

Who can apply: You will need to earn at least 3,480 euros per month (four times Portugal’s national minimum wage as of 2025) and have savings worth at least 10,440 euros.

How to apply: Download the application form from the official Portuguese consulate website, gather your documents (proof of work, criminal record, travel insurance, passport photos, and more), and submit everything in person at a Portuguese consulate or embassy.

3. Croatia

Why you will love it: A jaw-dropping Adriatic coastline, Roman ruins, medieval streets, and some of the best seafood you will ever eat.

Application cost: From around $180

Croatia has had a digital nomad residency programme since January 2021, and it is a seriously compelling option.

The country’s dramatic natural scenery draws lovers of the outdoors and the sea in equal measure, and cities like Dubrovnik and Split are absolutely stunning, with Roman ruins and medieval streets that feel lifted straight out of a fantasy epic.

The visa allows stays of up to 18 months, and it is open to both remote workers and freelancers. One important rule: your employer cannot be a Croatian company.

Who can apply: You need to earn at least 3,295 euros per month (based on 2025 figures) and work for a company registered outside Croatia.

How to apply: You can apply online or in person. If you apply online, the nearest police station to your Croatian address processes your application. Americans who do not need a tourist visa in advance can also apply directly from within Croatia at the local police station.

4. Iceland

Why you will love it: Otherworldly landscapes, incredible outdoor adventures, and a capital city that punches way above its weight for culture and food.

Application cost: Around $90

If the idea of working remotely while the Northern Lights dance outside your window sounds appealing, Iceland has a visa for you. Launched in 2020, the Long-Term Visa for remote workers allows non-EU citizens to stay in the country for up to 180 days.

Who can apply: You must work permanently for a foreign company or be self-employed, not require a Schengen visa for travel, and not have held this visa in the past 12 months. The income threshold is approximately $7,900 per month (or higher if a partner is joining you).

How to apply: Fill in the application form, collect your documents (proof of income, health insurance, passport photos), pay the fee, and send everything by mail or drop it off at the Directorate of Immigration in Reykjavík, or at a District Commissioners office outside the capital.

Application cost: Around $85

Greece practically sells itself. Thanks to a digital nomad visa introduced in 2021, the dream of working from a sun-baked Greek island is no longer just a fantasy.

The visa is valid for up to 12 months and can be renewed for another year. Freelancers, the self-employed, and remote employees of foreign companies are all eligible.

Who can apply: You must earn a net income of at least 3,500 euros per month after tax, with additional adjustments for any family members joining you.

How to apply: Gather your proof of work and income, evidence of an address in Greece, a clean criminal record, health insurance documentation, and a clean bill of health, then submit everything in person at a Greek consulate. You will be notified of approval within 10 days.

Estonia is genuinely fascinating. Almost every government service, from birth certificates to contract signing, is available online, and the country has widespread public Wi-Fi and a booming startup scene. Its digital nomad visa, launched in 2020, allows remote workers to stay for up to a year.

Who can apply: You must be able to do your job 100 percent remotely, have a non-Estonian employer and predominantly non-Estonian clients, and earn at least 4,500 euros per month.

How to apply: Complete the online application form, print and gather your supporting documents, then bring everything to the nearest Estonian embassy or consulate. Budget up to 30 days for processing.

The Carpathian Mountains, the Danube Delta, and the legendary Transylvanian forests (sometimes called the Yellowstone of Europe) make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Its digital nomad visa programme has been running since January 2022 as part of an effort to attract high earners from abroad.

Application cost: Between $93 and $175, depending on the consulate

With one of the highest qualities of life in the world, late night tapas as a cultural institution, and everything from the Basque Country to Andalucia on your doorstep, it is easy to see the appeal.

Who can apply: Any foreigner working remotely for an employer outside Spain. Self-employed individuals who work for a Spanish company can also apply, as long as that work accounts for no more than 20 percent of their total income. You will need an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or at least three years of professional experience in your field.

How to apply: First, apply for an NIE number (Spain’s equivalent of a Social Security number). Then, submit a national visa application form, passport photos, your passport, proof of residency in the consular district, a criminal record certificate, health insurance, proof of employment, and proof of financial means equivalent to at least 200 percent of the Spanish national minimum wage.

Italy’s off-season is also wildly underrated, so arriving outside of peak summer months means you can enjoy the most famous places without the crowds.

Who can apply: Freelancers, consultants, independent specialists, or employees who can work fully remotely, with a minimum annual income of around 25,500 euros.

How to apply: Book an in-person appointment at an Italian consulate, submit your application with proof of accommodation and health insurance, and show evidence that you have been working remotely for at least six months. A university degree, professional licence, or verifiable professional experience is also required.

The relatively low cost of living, the incredible architecture, and the ease of travelling onward to neighbouring countries make this a smart base for remote workers who want to see as much of Europe as possible.

The country does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa, but freelancers and self-employed workers with a business established abroad can apply for a residence permit. There is one key condition: you need a Norwegian client paying at or above the minimum wage.

Who can apply: Independent contractors with a business established abroad who earn at least around $36,000 per year, have health insurance, and have secured a Norwegian client paying minimum wage or above.
